UBC Poetry Slam
"Born in September 2009, UBC Slam Poetry was the brainchild of two crazy poets who thought it'd be great to bring spoken word to the campus of UBC. In the years since, our small community has grown. With biweekly shows and writing workshops, UBC Slam Poetry has flourished and has been able to represent at national festivals. Representing UBC Slam Poetry at the Canadian Individual Poetry Slam in 2011 was Francis Arevalo, followed by Mike Johnston in 2012, Sebastien Wen in 2013, Mariah Lynne Dear in 2014, Jaime Silverthorn in 2016, and Savannah Pulfer in 2017.
What is a poetry slam, you ask? We're going to let Wikipedia tell you, because we're lazy poets.
"A poetry slam is a competition at which poets read or recite original work. These performances are then judged on a numeric scale by previously selected members of the audience."
Thanks, Wikipedia. Come hang out with us."
